A school began on this site for several years in the 80's and 90's for students for whom conventional schooling was not working, with a focus on vocational training. The site had previously been the Isabella Henderson Free Kindergarten, and was eventually folded into Collingwood College. There is a reference to the Island School within "The School on the Flat", a text in the Yarra Libraries local history collection about Collingwood College.
