Leading lights or beacons (also known as range lights in the United States) are used to assist maritime vessels in navigating narrow and dangerous channels. They operate in a pair, with the rear light positioned at a higher elevation behind the front light. Of particular use for navigating at night, the lights only become aligned with each other when a vessel is on the appropriate bearing, therefore indicating the correct course for navigating a narrow or shallow channel.
