In May 1897 a golf course was first proposed for Fishermens Bend on 140 acres (56.7 hectares) of crown land extending from the corner of Lorimar and Ingles Streets towards the south-west. A 12-hole course was eventually laid out by 1903 covering 70 acres (28.3 hectares). In the same year the Victorian Golf Club was established with the main aim of forming a ‘good’ golf club that would play over the Fishermans Bend course. In 1909 the state government’s Governor in Council proclaimed the course a sanctuary for birds and animals, in recognition of the course’s habitat value. As a result the club planned to plant the area with trees for both ornamental value and to further improve habitat. This plan was eventually forgotten when the site, leased from the crown, was required for government use. In 1926 the golf club relocated to its present site in Cheltenham, with the Fishermans Bend course eventually redeveloped to become part of the Government Aircraft Factories and runways.
