This bridge, although it also provides pedestrian access between Abbotsford and Studley Park, was primarily constructed to transport fresh water from a reservoir on the Studley Park Hill to the Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately just after completion the record-breaking flood of July 1891 destroyed the bridge, and it had to be re-built.
