This street was first named in Robert Russell's plan of subdivision in 1854, and is probably the oldest street name in North Fitzroy. The land was then owned by William Thomas, and the street was named after his daughter Emily Eliza who had married Robert Pilkington. The sheds for the 1886 cable trams were at the eastern side until 1939. Then the land was sold, and the existing villa units were built.
