The site now occupied by Specsavers was once the home of Steel Castings. Here steel heated to 1600 degrees C was poured into sand moulds to create steel castings for heavy machinery. Over the road was one of the sites occupied by Malcolm Moore Industries which made cranes, buckets and other heavy equipment for the mining and other industries as far afield as Celebration Mine in Western Australia.
