The rotunda symbolises the social importance of gathering together to experience musical performances. There were three main types of music that were played in band rotundas in the early to mid nineteenth century: military, church and village bands. At the opening of this rotunda, the Port Phillip citizens band performed. No recordings remain of this event, but you can imagine the sound of the navy band wafting through the neighbourhood.
